National food loss and waste baseline index and reduction roadmap

Challenge

A national mandate to cut food loss and waste with no credible baseline to measure against, and no shared method across a fragmented set of institutions.

Approach

Measurement indices were built from a credible zero, the reduction strategy designed, and the team embedded alongside the institution to stand up governance and tracking.

• 01Built a food loss and waste quantification method aligned to FAO, UNEP and SDG frameworks
• 02Planned the study with stakeholders and stood up a national PMO for the field exercise
• 03Covered 80,000+ sampling points through multiple data-collection partners
• 04Built the analytics engine for hotspot, root-cause and commodity-level insight

Outcome

A national index and reduction roadmap adopted by the institution, with a measurement method now used to report progress year on year.
